TRUMP PART 1:
TRUMP & THE RISE OF MAGA
When was America “great”? The question lays at the heart of Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and election. At best, Trump pointed to eras that were times of de facto segregation and violent Jim Crowism. Even if the generation of America’s “greatness” is a complete fabrication of Trump, his rhetoric reveals that it is a greatness built around white (male) privilege and dominance and racial disenfranchisement. Unsurprisingly, Trump’s election saw an explosion of anti-Blackness in the form of “Blue Lives Matter” armed protests, Neo-Nazis marches, and Proud Boy white Nationalist rantings. In the days after Trump’s election, there was a marked increase in racist slogans and hateful messages. The Southern Poverty Law Center alone found 867 cases of hateful harassment or intimidation in the 10 days after the Nov. 8 election. Thus, as one periodical put it, 2016 was “the year racism and fear made a comeback”. Below you will find a selection of articles and videos outlining key aspects of Trump’s history with racism, as well as the rise of racist and conspiratorial movements that thrived during his presidency including MAGA.
